Welcome to Centre Marembo
“There is no such thing as a street kid; the street cannot have kids. These are children that we, the community, have abandoned, and we need to take responsibility.”
Centre Marembo opened its doors in 2003 to provide young street girls and boys with access to education, healthcare, safety and love. In 2012, their mission shifted towards focusing exclusively on the needs of women and girl’s and currently, they are the only organization in Kigali who support and shelter only girls.
Centre Marembo receives girls from the street that have been the victims of domestic and sexual violence. These girls are placed in one of the Centre’s two houses: Abatuje House and Harakeye House where they receive shelter, education, counseling and skills training.
When initially brought to the Centre, girls are placed in Harakeye House to help them better deal with their psycho-social difficulties and emotional traumas.
Once the girl’s have adapted to normal life again, they are placed in Abatuje house where they undergo counseling and begin the process of reintegration back into their communities.
Education and training
As the Centre is focused on reintegration of children and serves as a transitional institution, it provides the following services for its beneficiaries.
The Centre is currently supporting 75 young girls however the demand for our services is growing at a far faster rate than we can presently meet. We hope that you will explore our website and learn more about the work that our Centre is doing to support children’s rights in Rwanda and that it may inspire you to partner with us in our efforts.
