Laboratory

Centre Marembo’s targets especially vulnerable girls and young women who were neglected and mostly abused or raped.
Apart from the mental and emotional damage that is done to them, most of them suffer from sexual transmitted diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis C, etc.
While struggling to satisfy their daily basic needs, street girls don't care sufficiently about their health. Very often they don't realize they are infected, but even if they do, accessing laboratory services is difficult. Testing and adequate treatments can be too expensive or the girls feel too ashamed to consult public hospitals and health centers.

To fill that gap Centre Marembo is currently building a clinic that will provide trustworthy medical and mental health care.  The staff will provide care that is sensitive to the needs of girls who have suffered traumatizing events.  The clinic is located on a recently purchased plot of land in Karubibi Village, Cyaruzinge Cell, Ndera Sector, Gasabo District , City of Kigali. We expect to improve health, prevent new contamination, and reduce unwanted pregnancies among other goals.

The construction receives professional and financial support by Dr. Erika Hronicek, a retired pediatrician and her Austrian NGO (Verein für ganzheitliche Förderung).

1. Laboratory

Provision of VCT (voluntary counselling and testing for HIV/AIDS) as well as testing, diagnosis, and treatment for: sexual transmitted diseases, Hepatitis, and other blood-born illnesses. In addition DNA testing can be completed to identify the girls’ parentage.

2. Consultation

Psycho-social consultation and assessment of appropriate therapy needs.

3. Sex education and family planning

Information center and workshops will be provided for the subject. Presentation of contraceptive methods (natural and modern) including the pill and condoms. This service is open to everybody.

The clinic’s three sections will complete the medical care for the girls in our care. It also provides a location for both private consultation and public education.
