Gikondo ECD Center

The Gikondo Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center officially opened in September 2024, welcoming 30 children aged 2 to 6 during the school registration period. Before opening, the center underwent major renovations based on recommendations from the Gikondo Sector, including an extended kitchen and the replacement of windows to meet safety and health standards.

The ECD Center operates Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It provides a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day. Beyond early childhood education, the center also supports young mothers by enabling them to return to work or attend workshops and vocational training, with the confidence that their children are in a safe and nurturing environment.

Previously, the facility served as a shelter for adolescent mothers, gender-based violence (GBV) survivors, and homeless girls, offering care and support during their rehabilitation and reintegration into their families and communities. In mid-2023, renovation efforts began to transform the space into an ECD center. The shelter had been closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in adherence to health guidelines and social distancing measures.
